Bimetallic Thermal Relay
Bimetallic thermal relays consist of two strips of different metals. These dissimilar metals are permanently joined. Heating the bimetallic strip causes it to bend because the dissimilar metals expand and contract at different rates. The bimetallic strip also applies tension to a spring on a contact. If heat begins to rise, the strip bends and the spring pulls the contacts apart, breaking the circuit.

| |
Eutectic Alloy Thermal Relay
Eutectic (melting alloy) thermal relays consist of a heater coil, a eutectic alloy, and a mechanical mechanism which activates a tripping device when an overload occurs. To measure the temperature of the motor, the relay monitors the amount of current being drawn. This is done indirectly, through a heater coil.
| |
Solid State Overload Relay
Solid-state overload relays do not have moving, mechanical parts. Instead, they calculate the average temperature within the motor by monitoring its starting and running currents. Solid-state overload relays are a type of overcurrent relay.
| |
Temperature Control (Probe) Thermal Relay
These relays protect the motor by using thermistor or resistance temperature detector (RTD) probes to directly sense the windings' temperature. The motor must have one or more positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor probes embedded in its windings. When the probe's nominal operating temperature is reached, the resistance increases rapidly. This increase is detected by a threshold circuit that controls a set of relay contacts.

Full Load Current Range
The adjustable current value allows the relay to be set to the full-load current shown on the motor-rating plate. Full-load current range is the current range that can be adjusted to the desired trip point.

| |
Temperature Trip Range
Temperature trip range is the trip-point setting range for relays that are designed to monitor the temperature of the motor stator windings.

| |
Trip Class
Trip class is the maximum time (in seconds) at which the overload relay trips when carrying current at 600% of its current rating. Bimetallic overload relays can be rated as Class 10, meaning that they break the circuit no more than 10 seconds after a locked rotor condition begins. Generally, melting alloy overload relays are Class 20 devices. Although thermal overload relays are designed to protect motors against overload currents, they must be capable of handling large currents without tripping for short periods during motor starting (run-up). They should, however, trip quickly if the starting currents last too long.

| |
Control Voltage
The control voltage is specified if it is different from the motor voltage. This is called "separate control" because the control circuit gets its power from a separate source, usually lower in voltage than the motor's power source.

Pole Specifications
| |
Your choices are...
| |
Single Pole (SP)
Single pole (SP) relays have a single, moveable lever with a contact at the end.
| |
Double Pole (DP)
Double pole (DP) relays consist of two, single-pole contacts that are concurrently actuated by the same mechanical system and operation. Typically, the first line is hot and the second is neutral.
| |
Triple Pole (TP)
Triple pole (TP) relays consist of three single-pole contact systems.
| |
Four Pole (4P)
Relays with more than three poles are indicated by the number of single-pole contacts followed by the letter "P". For example, four-pole relays are 4P devices.

Features

| |
Your choices are...
| |
Automatic Reset?
The relay resets automatically after conditions return to normal.
| |
Ambient Temperature Compensation
Overload relays with ambient temperature compensation operate reliably over a wide ambient range.
| |
Phase Failure (Loss)?
The relay monitors for voltage with the incorrect phase sequence, or one or more phases open.
| |
Phase Reversal?
Phase reversal is a change of one-half cycle or 180° in phase.
| |
Phase Unbalance?
The relay operates when the magnitude of one current exceeds the magnitude of another current by a predetermined degree. Voltage balance operates in a similar manner.
| |
Underload Detection
Underload protection determines when a motor, which is normally running on load, is accidentally unloaded. This may occur, for example, if a pump runs dry. The reduction in motor current is sensed, and the tripping point can be set.
| |
Visual Indicator
The relay has visual indicator such as a light-emitting diode (LED).
