Specialty lamps and specialty light sources are proprietary products and accessories related to lighting. These lamp light sources can include products for special industries such as forensic science or medical decontamination or energy-efficient alternatives to residential and commercial lighting. Specialty lamps and specialty light sources also include ultraviolet lamps or UV lamps, cold cathode lamps, fluorescent lamps, quartz lamps, gas-discharge lamps, and fiber optic light sources. Alternate light sources are used to retrofit existing installations with more energy-efficient fixtures. Solar lighting is a common alternate light source.

Fiber light sources or fiber optic light sources are specialty lamps and specialty light sources that house several components, including light sources, filters, power supplies, and controllers. A fiber light source provides precise and efficient lighting for medical and laboratory applications, including use with microscopes or other instrumentation.

Forensic light sources are used to gather evidence in the processing of crime or accident scenes. A forensic light source must be compact, portable, durable, and reliable. These specialty lamps and specialty light sources are used to detect shoe prints, hair and fibers, particulate matter, and fingerprints. Forensic light sources are made with a variety of lamp technologies, including high intensity light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and Xenon arc lamps.

Infrared lamps use infrared (IR) radiation to produce high heat. An infrared lamp can be used in both commercial and residential applications, including some medical applications such as incubation. IR lamps must be used with caution because of their potential to cause burns or damage to the eyes. Some models also operate under high pressure and can shatter if not handled properly.

Other specialty lamps and specialty light sources include low voltage light bulbs. A 12 volt specialty LED lamp can be used in outdoor and indoor applications. Products come in a variety of lamp types, shapes and wattages. Used in automotive and marine applications, 12 volt specialty LED lamps are used in brake and tail lights because they are shock and vibration resistant as well as long-lived.
