ROSA / TOSA

ROSA / TOSA

Hamamatsu has a long history of manufacturing InGaAs and GaAs PIN photodiodes with built-in ampiflier to simplify circuit integration in the telecommunication and data communication markets.

Now they are pleased to introduce their new product family based on Optical Sub Assembly (OSA) concept. These new devices consist of transmitters or receivers put into similar molded plastic packages, including integral aspheric lens and 1.25 mm diameter cylindric ferrule. The main features of these modules are simplicity in assembly and low cost, compared to the conventional receptable modules.

This is the reason why ROSA (Receiver Optical Sub Assembly) and TOSA (Transreceiver Optical Sub Assembly) became key components of transreceivers for optical data links. To meet the market demand, Hamamatsu has now developed TOSA and ROSA for both wavelength windows: 850 nm and 1310 nm.

The 850 nm data communication market is based on two major standarts: Fibre Channel (for SAN)and Ethernet (for LAN). The G9285-14 and G9286-14, using GaAs PIN photodiodes in TP46 package with TIA and AGC, are the ROSA matched to this application. Moreover both can be used with multi mode fiber or single mode fiber. Hamamatsu has introduced the L9279-14, based on VCSEL technology with incorporated photodiode for current monitoring. The choice of the components is directly linked to the low cost aspect which is the major concern for this market.

The current wavelength windows used for the telecommunication market are 1310 nm and 1550 nm. InGaAs photodiodes are the dedicated receivers for these wavelengths. We offer four types for different data rates (155 Mbps, 622 Mbps, 1.25 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps), compliant with the SDH/SONET standarts. All of them integrate an InGaAs PIN photodiode in TO46 package with TIA and AGC function to maintain high gain performance. The corresponding TOSA is the L9278-14 integrating a Fabry Perrot Laser Diode in CD package with peak wavelength at 1310 nm.

In parallel Hamamatsu continue to develop receivers with higher speed and should soon be able to supply InGaAs or GaAs ROSA with 10 Gbps data rate.
