Chip-on-board illuminance sensor displays spectral

Chip-on-board illuminance sensor displays spectral response close to human eye sensitivity The miniature S10604 photo IC diode has reduced sensitivity to infrared light.

Bridgewater, New Jersey – May 1, 2008 – Hamamatsu Corporation has introduced a new chip-on-board-type illuminance sensor, the S10604. This RoHS-compliant sensor is ideal as an energy-saving sensor for large-screen TV brightness control, as a backlight dimmer in liquid-crystal displays on cell phones, and in other applications where the level of the ambient light is measured.

The S10604's miniature package (2.0 mm x 1.25 mm x 0.8 mm) saves space in equipment where component assembly space is critical. The S10604 is the same size as typical chip resistors, lending itself to pick-and-place operation during mass production of equipment without the need for special assembly apparatus.

Due to reduced sensitivity to infrared light, this sensor has a spectral response characteristic even closer to that of the human eye. The S10604 circuit was designed to reduce effects from infrared LED light at 940 nm, light usually used for remote control tasks, which causes unwanted effects. In addition, the S10604 features minimal color temperature error. Output variations are minimized when detecting light of the same brightness such as light from a fluorescent lamp and incandescent lamp.
